Posted on: February 21st, 2012

A big thank you to the North Bay Trappers who took on the Hands’ team from St. Alexander school on January 31st. While it was a close game, the students were victorious coming through with the game day trophy! The students rose to the occasion and each one deserved their MVP prize signed by the North Bay Trappers. The students had a blast, and the Trappers were great opponents.

Thank you NB Trappers!

Hands storytelling project receives funding from RBC Foundation

Posted on: February 16th, 2012

This week at Mother St. Bride Catholic Elementary School, Hands’ storytelling project ‘Difficult Lives, Inspiring Stories’ received funding from the RBC Foundation. This project has been supported for four years by the Royal Bank of Canada Foundation and this support allows our storyteller, Jim MacLachlan, to research and present mental health stories to elementary and secondary schools as well as service clubs and businesses. The RBC Foundation financial support also means that there is no cost to each school and school board for these unique story experiences. To date these mental health stories have been presented to over 10,000 students in 7 Ontario school boards.

The Hands/RBC Foundation storytelling project began in 2008/2009 and has grown into a project with a provincial perspective. This year Hands has signed an Affiliation Agreement with the Mental Health Commission of Canada to assess the impact of these stories on student audiences. The Near North District School Board has agreed to host this evaluation process which will be completed this spring. The results will be published this fall and the Hands team is hopeful that this method fo delivering mental health messages to students will be formally accredited by the Commission. This would result in the Commission adding ‘Difficult Lives, Inspiring Stories’ to their list, which receives national recognition.
