Home Depot Makes Autism Playground a Reality

Posted on: September 14th, 2012

The Home Depot Canada Foundation generously donated $2000 towards a new playground at Hands TheFamilyHelpNetwork.ca’s Autism Centre in North Bay. In addition, Home Depot provided volunteer labour along with their building knowledge and expertise to make the playground a reality.

Team Depot, a group of volunteers many of whom currently work for Home Depot, or have in the past, were on hand Friday September 14th partnering with Hands staff to get the job done.

The Home Depot Foundation matches dollars raised through in-store initiatives two-to-one, with every dollar going back into local community projects such as this. Team Depot Captain James Sutherland and Team Depot Leader Wayne Poisson said their group of volunteers take on many jobs in the Nipissing District and are more than happy to help out.

Dr. Karen Grattan-Miscio, Clinical Director of Autism Services at Hands said Team Depot “did a fantastic job, they were supportive and so easy to work with! The children we serve with Autism will benefit immensely from this playground.”

The playground will serve as a safe place for children with Autism to practice gross motor skills, play and have a break from intensive therapy.

Hands TheFamilyHelpNetwork.ca extends their deepest gratitude to the Home Depot Canada Foundation for their donation, as well as our local Team Depot for their time and dedication to the project. Thank you as well to Dr. Karen Grattan-Miscio for taking the initiative to apply for the funding and get the ball rolling!

The article titled “Organization Does A Lot of Good in District” was a brief look at the organization and the many services provided across Nipissing, Parry Sound and Muskoka Districts – all written by former Hands Board member Jim MacLachlan.

Thank you to Jim for taking the time to share his thoughts on the organization!
