Shine The Light 2012 Winner Announced

On May 12th, Hands announced the winners of our Shine The Light 2012 video contest! The winner of this year’s contest was a student from St. Luke, Amanda Justice with her video Schizophrenia 3! Visit our youtube channel at www.youtube.com/handsshinethelight to watch all of our contestants videos!

Rounding out the top spots were:

Hands would like to thank all those students who submitted videos to the contest. It was a difficult task picking the top videos this year as there were so many good submissions! Everyone is a winner when it comes to promoting mental health awareness!

Widdifield’s Dinner for Hands a Tremendous Success!

On Wednesday May 9th, Widdifield’s student group “Free The Children” hosted an International Dinner with proceeds going to Hands The FamilyHelpNetwork.ca and our new Children’s Residential Treatment Centre! The night, which started off with welcoming remarks from Hands’ Executive Director Jeffrey Hawkins and Board of Directors President Jim MacLachlan, continued with live dance performances by Widdifield students. The sold out crowd was treated to a delicous four-course meal prepared by the chef of Le Bon Marche Glenn Sheridan. Other features of the evening were the silent auction, an art auction and Widdifield’s Marketplace Shopping which included a very popular Henna Tattoo table.

It was a wonderful night, the Widdifield students and teachers did an incredible job preparing and organizing the entire evening. Hands is incredibly proud and honoured to have been a part of this fabulous evening.

Sturgeon Falls Open House a Hit!

On Saturday May 5th Sturgeon Falls Hands’ office celebrated children’s mental health week with a BBQ and open house! The event was a tremendous success with over 300 people in attendance. The face painting table and bouncing castle were a huge hit for the kids!

Hands kicks off CMH Week with a Wave!

Hands joined other Nipissing community mental health partners in a “beat the monday blues” wave at the Lakeshore Dr. overpass. Our dedicated crew took to the streets with signs and enthousiasm receiving many honks and waves in return.

The Wave was created to bring awareness to mental health week and mental health issues and supports.

Children’s Mental Health Week 2012 Activities

For one week in May, people across Ontario celebrate Children’s Mental Health week with activities and events which bring awareness to children’s mental health issues and supports.

This year Children’s Mental Health Week is May 6th -12th, and Hands is hosting and participating in a variety of activities and events taking place across the Region!

Events include:

Shine The Light video contest
Contest wraps up April 30th. The contest is open to students in grades 7-12 across Nipissing and Parry Sound.

Mental Health Literacy Presentations
May 7th-11th, Hands staff will be providing general ianformation and resources related to children’s mental health. For more information, or to book a presentation call Steve at 705-476-2293 x 1378

Sturgeon Falls Open House
Saturday May 5th from 11:00am-1:00pm, Hands’ Sturgeon Falls office is hosting an open house with free BBQ, kids activities and face painting. Office located at 65 Queen St., Sturgeon Falls.

Mental Health Week Wave
Monday May 7th from 8:00am to 9:00am, Hands is joining other North Bay mental health agencies in a “Beat the Monday Blues” wave on the Lakeshore Drive, North Bay overpass. Come join us as we kick-off the week’s events and raise awareness for adult and child mental health week!

CMH Week BBQ
Monday May 7th from 12:00pm to 1:30om, Hands’ North Bay office is hosting a kick-off BBQ with free food for all those who stop by!

Widdifield’s International Dinner

Building for Today and Tomorrow
Wednesday May 9th, Almaguin Highlands Secondary School is hosting an event which showcases programs for youth and families from grades 7 to age 25 accessing services. Hands among with other community partners will have a booth set-up with information about the services we offer.

Shine The Light Awards
Saturday May 12th from 10:30am to 12:00pm, Hands is hosting the Shine The Light 2012 video contest awards. These awards will showcase the top videos submitted by our local youth. Prizes will be given, free food will be served, and many of our community partners will be in attendance. Live entertainment promises to make this event something to remember! Widdifield’s 5th Annual International Dinner to Benefit Hands

Every year Widdifield Secondary School’s student committee “Free The Children”, hosts an International Dinner with proceeds supporting an international children’s charity. For the first time in their 5 year history, the students have chosen to keep their charity local, and are donating all of their event proceeds to Hands TheFamilyHelpNetwork.ca, and specifically to our new Children’s Residential Treatment Centre!

Join us for a delicious four-course meal by chef Glenn Sheridan (Le Bon Marche), live entertainment, and marketplace shopping!

Shine The Light 2012 – Deadline April 30th

Hands’ 2nd annual Shine The Light video contest in support of mental health awareness among youth is underway!

Shine The Light 2012 is a video contest open to Nipissing and Parry Sound Districts students in grades 7-12. Students must create an original video representing the theme “increasing awareness and decreasing the stigma of mental health“. Last year, Hands received over 40 video submissions, and staff are hoping to double that number this year. The contest which launched February 10th closes on April 30th, with grand prizes given out during Children’s Mental Health Week May 6-12, 2012.

Hands’ invites all those interested to visit the Shine The Light 2012 section of their website to see full contest rules and to submit a video. There are lots of amazing prizes to be won, including the grand prize: $500 Walmart gift card!

Hands TheFamilyHelpNetwork.ca received $1000.00 from Scotiabank’s Bright Future’s Scotia Employee Volunteer Program. Under the Scotia Employee Volunteer Program, Scotiabank donates money each year to charitable organizations in which Scotiabank employees are active volunteers. We appreciate Scotiabank’s recognition of our volunteer activities within our organization.

Hands’ North Bay Autism Services have Moved

Our Autism Services in the North Bay area have moved to 820 Lakeshore Drive. The services included in the move are:

ASD School Support Program (SSP)
Behaviour Communication Therapy (BCT) services
Enhanced Respite Services
Autism Intervention Program (AIP)

We are very excited to have all of our Autism Services in this new space as it will streamline and enhanced the quality of the services that we offer.
