Community Goes Blue for Autism Awareness

Posted on: April 1st, 2016

In celebration of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2016, Hands TheFamilyHelpNetwork.ca, community partners and local businesses are lighting it up blue to show support for those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.

“Light It Up Blue” is an international initiative to shine the light on Autism. This year, the activity has been launched locally by the Lyons family in partnership with Hands. The family and organization hope that North Bay will join them in blue to share Autism awareness. Residents are encouraged to participate as well by lighting their houses in blue on Friday, April 1st and Saturday, April 2nd.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Autism Spectrum Disorder can be further associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention, and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances.
